The Positive Side
Hello to you today! I thought I would share with you a letter I wrote to my sister (left) who has been incarcerated for a year and a half. She will be released near the end of the month!!!! These are my thoughts for her today and perhaps for you and me as well!
Dear Barb, 10/02/08
I want to write this letter to encourage you to see that succeeding is not as hard as we make it out to be!!!!
You see there are two sides to all of us: the negative side and the positive side. One side has a hard time coping from all that has happened to us. This side is sure that life is fragile, incomplete and wanting. This side is afraid all the time; that there is not enough, that you are not good enough, that you can’t be what you want to be, or have what you want to have. This side joins in with the universal misery that permeates the world. It keeps people in poverty, unemployment, failure, and doubt. It robs our hearts and lives. It takes whatever it can from us. It can be constant, fierce and subtle. It holds us back from the potential that we all possess in life. It suffocates our creativity and ingenuity. It flows down into our hearts/minds and makes us miserable people who complain, blame and make excuses. It tries to guarantee that all of our relationships are strained and fragmenting. It always blows things so far out of proportion that we feel as if everything is coming apart at the seams.
This negative side will always be with us as long as we live. It is part of our human experience. But there is a bright side! We also possess a positive side!!!! It is our Spirit and it can carry us when we are weak, encourage us when we feel hurt, and spur us on when we become weary. It is the voice that tells you, “Everything is going to be ok”. It is the feeling you get after you have helped someone out. It is the music we all dance to. This side joins in with the great collective consciousness/ compassion of the world. It is what makes life beautiful! This positive side will heal your mind, body, and soul. It will spill over from you right into others without you even realizing it. It will show you the way, give you the truth, and teach you how to love. It can be constant, fierce and subtle. It pushes us farther onward to fulfill our life’s purpose. It helps us to love all the people in our lives regardless of what they do or say to us, and it is the rational we hear in our heads when all seems dark.
This positive side will always be with us as long as we live. It is part of our human experience. It is the reason we can keep going on. It is why we can wake up in the morning and know that THIS DAY IS NEW, I CAN MAKE IT ANYTHING I DESIRE!
In every day and every moment we decide which side to be on. Do we want healing, growth, peace and love in our lives? Then we had better live/breathe/speak/act on the positive side!
Amen (so be it)
